New flowerpots in the house! Thanks Bas Barcelona, we love these locally hand-made nests for plants.
Happy International Women’s Day! Here are some women we truly admire!
Mari: Elizabeth Eidenbenz was a teacher, nurse and founder of the Mothers of Elne (also known as Maternitat d'Elna in Catalan). Between 1939 and 1944, she saved some 600 children who were mostly the children of Spanish Republicans, Jewish refugees and gypsies fleeing the Nazi invasion. [Top left photo via L’Indépendant. ]
Petz: I had the pleasure to assist at a conference where eco-activist Vandana Shiva was giving a speech years ago, and loved the way she talks to her audience, in a positive, encouraging, funny and motivating way. [Bottom left photo via Seed Freedom]
If I could nominate someone for president, it would be Naomi Klein! I was so taken by her last book “This Changes Everything” that I even sent a copy to Pablo Iglesias and his team from the political party Podemos, asking them to read it and then send it on to Ada Colau, who since then has become the mayor of Barcelona! Who would you like to say “well done and happy women’s day” today?
Here are some lovely photos of yök and us, Mari and Petz, by Tanya Khvorostiana (the girl with the cup in the bottom photo :)
Tonight at 19:30h TVE Catalunya will show the documentary about Catalan designer Miguel Milá, by local filmmaker Poldo Pomés. For more information, read “Imprescindible el documental sobre el genio Miguel Milá” via diarioDISIGN and “Mira (y aprende con) el tráiler de Miguel Milà, la leyenda viva del diseño catalán” via El País.
We are happy to be featured in the Catàleg Ecodisseny de Catalunya (Eco-design of Catalonia Catalogue). Check out the online version to find locally made eco-design.
It’s looking festive at yök, come on in!! We use a fully biodegradable and locally grown decoration every year, to make our Casas even cosier for a few days.
Anoche have come up with a new way to illuminate well with less energy, using LED lighting and a way to distribute the light further from the source. They also divide the street into slow (pedestrian) and fast (cars) moving areas and illuminate accordingly. Please see their web site for more information.
We are on nationa tv! Thank you Verd Primera by BTV for the visit. (Please note, the images between minute 0:47 and 1:15 are not of yök.)
Silke Wichert from the Süddeutsche Zeitung visited us- read her report in the Magazin!
Jordi Évole from Salvados interviewed Naomi Klein. Brilliant, please watch this!
We love books, and invite our guests to borrow our favourite novels and books about design, Barcelona and sustainability from our library (photo above). For more book spots in our city, check out The Observer’s “A bookworm’s tour of Barcelona’s librerías”!
Among its many cultural attractions, Barcelona’s unique and varied bookshops don’t feature heavily on many visitors’ hit lists. Yet they should. There are around 50 spread across the city.
Interesting article! We warn our guests about pickpockets- they are clever, so all you have to do is be more clever!
The tomato season is still in full swing, so we suggest you start the day with a delicious pan con tomate! Preferably from our rooftop terrace :)
Tourist apartments can be a problem in Barcelona, but mayor Ada Colau is working on solutions. This flat detector makes it easier for travellers and neighbours to find illegal apartments that create problems, and to report them. As a fully licensed business we like this and hope you find it useful too!
Here is another movie we highly recommend! Unlike many doomsday films, Demain shows real solutions regarding climate change, agriculture, education, energy, democracy and many other subjects our society needs to tackle.
If you speak Luxembourgish, check out Christian Schmit’s interview with Petz for RTL Luxembourg as part of the series “Lëtzebuerger an der Welt”.
We’d like to introduce you to Miquel Solé, who works with us this summer!

Alcaldessa is a documentary we went to see this week about our mayor, Ada Colau. It’s the same woman the Guardian wondered whether it is “the world’s most radical mayor”. We found the documentary very interesting and moving, even shed some tears! We hope it gets subtitles soon, so that more people can see it!
