Visit Catalonia’s only remaining singing fish auction
We are excited to launch a new tour this season, to help our guests or any visitor experience a piece of the real Barcelona, away from the more touristy places. A few weeks ago, we had the pleasure to test the trip to Montgat and were amazed at the authenticity of this experience, even for us who we know Barcelona quite well.
We left yök around 11 o’clock, together with Sandro and Cecilia, our guides, and arrived in this charming village after a short and pleasant train ride along the beach. Our group, us and 3 “real tourists”, was guided on a short walking tour through the picturesque village in order for everyone to get a glimpse into the true Mediterranean lifestyle.
Then, we got to assist at the only remaining singing fish auction in Catalonia! This was a very intimate affair, between us and the locals from the village who came to buy fish that day. You won’t be able to get any fresher or more locally-sourced and sustainably caught fish around here. Cecilia ended up buying an octopus herself which accompanied us to lunch (luckily the restaurant put it in the fridge for her). We had a delicious see food lunch in a local restaurant but usually (during the high season) you get to eat at a “xiringuito”, an authentic beach bar by the sea.
After that, we had to head back to work but we usually tell our guests to take their beach gear as it is very nice to spend the rest of the day at the Montgat beach.
If this is something that interests you, please get in touch with us. The tour is available for groups of 2-8 people, Tuesday to Friday, 11:00h to around 15:00h, in English, Spanish, German, Italian and Portuguese. For more information, please visit our Cultural Events & Tours page.
Sandro, who helps us out at yök on weekends, together with Cecilia, run Barcelona Plan-it, where they offer a range of slow travel experiences, mostly related to food. Another great experience is the tour of Barcelona’s fishing port!
